GAIL (India) Ltd has commenced gas supply to the Trombay region through the Dahej-Uran pipeline.

In a statement issued here, the company said that on Wednesday it has commenced natural gas supply to Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), Trombay, through a 40-km long Hazimalangwadi-Trombay pipeline at Mumbai.

The public sector gas transmission and marketing major GAIL, has signed heads of agreement with BPCL for supply of 0.9 million standard cubic metres a day (mscmd) of R-LNG, the statement said. “This is one of the several branch lines to be commissioned by GAIL to provide connectivity from its Dahej-Uran (DUPL) and Dabhol-Panvel pipelines (DPPL),” the company said. GAIL, through DUPL and DPPL pipelines, will transport gas from different supply sources such as Panna-Mukta and Tapti fields, Dahej R-LNG, Shell R-LNG, Reliance Industries Ltd, and from Dabhol LNG terminal currently under construction.

The statement said that GAIL is in the process of connecting a number of other consumers in the Trombay region, namely, RCF Trombay by end of August, and Tata Power and HPCL by February 2009.

Pipeline laying work for Tata Power and HPCL is in an advanced stage. GAIL will also be shortly connecting other consumers in and around the Mumbai region – Owens Corning, Bombay Dyeing, Hanil Era, Uttam Steel, Bhushan Steel, Supreme Petro, IIL, and NITCO.

The Dahej-Uran pipeline has linked the two important gas markets of Gujarat and Maharashtra. DUPL project was approved at an estimated cost of Rs 1,830 crore and DPPL project was approved at an estimated cost of Rs 1,326 crore. The total cost of the 581-km Dahej-Panvel-Dabhol pipeline is Rs 3,156 crore.
