India's IAEA briefing tomorrow

New Delhi, July 16

India plans to go ahead with its special briefing for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board Members in Vienna on July 18 on the proposed Indiaspecific safeguards agreement and other aspects of the Indo-US nuclear deal. "We just learnt that there is a briefing scheduled on Friday afternoon at a location outside of the IAEA. The invitation was distributed by India to the Board members," the IAEA spokesperson Ms Melissa Fleming told Business Line late Wednesday evening. India had earlier sent invitations to each of the 140 members of the IAEA. A meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, slated for August 1, to consider the safeguards agreement initialled on July 7, is also on track. Approval of the India-specific safeguards agreement by the IAEA Board is a crucial step in operationalising the Indo-US nuclear deal. After the safeguards agreement is in place, India has to get a waiver from the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) to allow it to have trade in the field with international community. On August 1, India is expected to brief the 35-member IAEA Board. The IAEA Board members also include 26 members who are also part of the NSG - the cartel that controls global uranium trade. - Our Bureau
