Tata Consultancy Services hired 8,982 employees in the first quarter of the fiscal; net employee addition in the quarter was 4,895.

Out of the gross additions, 4,495 were trainees, 2,905 experienced hires in India, and 1,582 recruits at overseas subsidiaries and branches.

The company’s overall attrition rate for the period was 12.8 per cent..

Attrition was 12.1 per cent in the IT services business and 20.5 per cent in the company’s BPO business, said a statement from the company.

“We are working to increase the productivity and utilisation rates of our employees,” said Mr. Ajoy Mukherjee, Vice President & Head, Global Human Resources, TCS.

Employee utilisation in the quarter was 78.3 per cent, excluding trainees, and 74.6 per cent, including trainees.

The total employee count at the company now stands at 1,16,308; they are from 64 different nationalities; 9.2 per cent of them are foreign nationals and 29 per cent, women.

Hiring for the current fiscal has already been committed, said a senior official from TCS.

Recruitment at the corporation is on course as taking in employees amounts to investing for the future, remarked Mr. S Ramadorai, CEO & MD, TCS, at a news conference today.

Salary raises, however, would not be as much as in the previous year given the general business scenario, remarked a TCS official.
