Hyderabad, July 16

The second phase of the State Government's Rs 950-crore health insurance scheme for the poor - Rajiv Arogya Sri - will be launched by the UPA Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, at Nellore on Thursday.

With this, over 90 per cent of the poor in the State, holding white ration cards, will have access to free medical treatment for 887 identified diseases in all the districts of the State, Mr Mohammed Ali Shabbir, Minister for Power, told newspersons after a meeting of the State Cabinet here on Wednesday.

The eligible families can avail themselves of free treatment for various diseases at 320 identified private and corporate hospitals, along with Government hospitals.

Out of Rs 950 crore needed for implementing the scheme, Rs 450 crore was provided in the 2008-09 Budget and the State Cabinet approved the remaining amount, he added.

The Cabinet also approved the launch of `104 Service' across the State to provide medical advice to the patients over a toll-free telephone number. The scheme would be implemented throughout the State from September. The Cabinet also ratified a decision to fill up 37 vacant posts in the State Human Rights Commission by sanctioning Rs 61.76 lakh per annum. A financial assistance of Rs 6.35 crore to 21 sugar factories for crushing 6.35 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, was also sanctioned, he added.
