Performance Industry & Economy - Pharmaceuticals Biocon gets global ranking of 20 Our Bureau Bangalore, July 17 Biocon Ltd has been ranked at number 20 amongst the top 25 global biotechnology companies by revenue, according to a report released by Med Ad News. Biocon is the only Asian company in the report that has been considered among drug-based firms for the ranking. A company release quoted Ms Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon Ltd, as saying, “It is a matter of immense pride for Biocon to be ranked amongst the top global league of biotech companies. This is a validation of our consistent effort at attaining global leadership and also highlights the true potential of this sector in India. This industry will be a key driver in India’s progress towards economic development.” 19 in USThe top 25 represent 62 per cent of all biotech sales and probably over 90 per cent of income. Nineteen of them are based in the US, the remaining six are from Europe, India and Australia. There are nearly 5,000 biotech companies across the globe. BIO 2008, held in San Diego in June, estimated that the global biotechnology industry will be a $100-billion (Rs 4,00,000 crore) annual business by 2010 — up from $85 billion (Rs 3,30,000 crore) in 2007.
