Policy Industry & Economy - Education Cabinet nod for 8 new IITs New Delhi, July 17 The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the setting up of eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) at a total cost of Rs 6,080 crore over a six-year period. The new IITs will come up in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and at Indore in Madhya Pradesh, the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, told newspersons after the Cabinet meeting. The cost of each IIT has been estimated at Rs 760 crore. The Cabinet also approved the formation of societies for creating legal entities for the new IITs. It also gave in-principle approval for converting the Institute of Technology (IT), Banaras Hindu University into an Indian Institute of Technology and integrating it with the IIT system in the country. To operationalise the eight new IITs, the Cabinet has approved the creation of one post each of Director and Registrar, for each of the eight IITs, as well as approval for creation of 30 faculty posts a year in the first three years. — Our Bureau More IITs in the offing IITs: Quality only because of exclusivity ‘Instant IITs no growth recipe’ Does India need more IITs?
