Fire department officials in Mumbai on Friday at the Peninsula Chambers where the Airtel office is situated. — Our Bureau Mumbai, July 18 Users of Bharti Airtel mobile services in Mumbai could not make or receive calls for the greater part of the day; the firm claimed this was due to a fire in the building housing the telephony company’s office here. The fire happened in the basement area of the building, thereby, impacting the systems through which network connectivity is established, a company spokesperson said. The Airtel mobile service was down from 9 a.m.. About 20 per cent of the company’s customer base in Mumbai has been affected. “We have proactively made provisions to route our customers’ calls and the affected customers should be able to resume calling in the next few hours,” the spokesperson said in a statement issued on Friday evening. Till the time of going to press (8 p.m.), however, the company’s services had not been restored. “Today, we realised how much the mobile phone rules our life. This incident shows that a large service provider such as Airtel does not have a disaster recovery mechanism in place,” said an irate Airtel customer.
