Gender Helping women break the ceiling Our Bureau Bangalore, July 18 Nearly 20 per cent of the two million IT/ITeS workforce are women and not even three per cent have reached senior management levels and less than one per cent are in CXO positions. “Statistics such as these are disturbing and Nasscom is taking all initiatives to increase this number substantially,” said Dr Ganesh Natarajan, CEO, Zensar Technologies and Chairman, Nasscom (National Association of Software and Services Companies). In his talk at Cisco’s Connected Women Leadership Forum on Thursday, Mr Natarajan said qualities such as ability to improvise with limited resources, higher capability to build trust, focusing on empowerment rather than power, setting clear directions and higher standards of performance are some of the differentiators that separate women leaders from their male peers. In a panel discussion on ‘Improving women leadership in technology,’ Ms Vasantha Erraguntla, Head of Design Lab, Intel, said women ‘need to stay in the game to get to the top of the game.’ Networking is not a bad word, it could be used to learn and get inspired, said the women on the panel. Ms Nagamani Murthy, Vice-President, Wipro, said women should clearly define expectations and use the mentoring system that organisations provide. “Women should use not just the support system at home, but also at work,” urged Ms Alka Manchanda, Director, Cisco.
