Institute for construction artisans to come up in Coimbatore

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, July 18 In an effort to bridge the gap in the availability of trained construction labourers, the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Coimbatore, and Builders’ Association of India (BAI), Coimbatore Centre, on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to start an institute — School of Construction Artisans.

The programme is supported by the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women.

Mr B. Jayaram, Chairman, Training Committee, BAI, said because of lack of recognition in the society, the artisans did not want their children to follow their footsteps into the trade, leading to an acute shortage in manpower.

3-month training

According to the MoU, BAI would build a hostel block and training yard at a cost of Rs 85 lakh.

In the first phase, 300 students would be trained every year to become skilled masons, bar benders, form work carpenters etc.

A three-month training would be followed by 12 months of onsite internship at the end of which the students would be given certificates.

He said the trainees would be provided with free boarding and lodging during training after which the students would be absorbed by member companies of BAI.

Lack of formal training

Mr G. Srinivasan, Chairman, BAI-Coimbatore Centre, said the lack of formal training by construction workers reflected on the quality of work and productivity and he hoped the institute would expand its activities by starting courses in construction management.

Mr Sanjay Arora, Inspector General of Police, West Zone, Coimbatore, said unlike in Western countries, in India only 5 per cent of the workforce have undergone training and hoped the institute would help bridge the gap.

Swami Atmaramananda, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, who signed the MoU with Mr G. Srinivasan, said the institute would provide a modern training yard with the latest tools, equipments and work materials.
