Elcot to build 50,000 sq ft of office space

Our Bureau

Tiruchi, July 18 The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) would build 50,000 sq ft of office space in each of the Information Technology Parks in the tier II cities of Tiruchi, Madurai, Salem, Tirunelveli, Salem and Hosur.

Each building would cost about Rs 15 crore. The total built up space in the two parks in Madurai would be around 1.25 lakh sq ft, including about 25,000 sq ft for the Disaster Recovery Centre.

The second IT Park at Chennai would get 10 million sq ft of office space, said Mr C.Umashankar, Managing Director, ELCOT, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of a computer training centre for government officials here on Friday.

Priority for IT majors

He disclosed that IT majors would get priority in allotment of plots in the Tiruchi IT Park. “The (ELCOT) Board has asked us to not to rush in and accord priority for big companies. A revised allotment proposal would be placed before the Board soon,” he said.

Rationale

Explaining the rationale behind the move, Mr Umashankar said smaller and start-up companies may require a longer gestation period, hampering the development of the IT Park itself. It was usual that bigger companies were accorded priority as anchors. Sutherland Global Services and Cognizant Technology Solutions have already been allotted 10 acres each at the Park. ELCOT has sought another 120 acres of land.
