M. Somasekhar G. Naga Sridhar

Hyderabad, July 27 Anu’s Laboratories will focus on making intermediates for off-patent drugs using its strengths in research and development (R&D) which it plans to beef up.

The Hyderabad-based chemical company, which has 5-6 products in the market, wants to push its R&D efforts to get into new products, especially in a couple of areas, where opportunities exist.

Stating this, Mr K. Hari Babu, Managing Director told Business Line that a couple of new products were already in the pipeline.

Anu’s Laboratories manufactures basic, advanced intermediates and fine chemicals and supplies them to various drug manufacturers.

Key intermediates like 2, 4-Dichloro-5-Fluoro Acetophenone (DCFA) (used in antibiotics like ciprofloxacin); Chlorohexanone (cardio vascular medicine) and Methyl-4 (4-Chloro 1 oxo butane) are produced.

IPO Proceeds

Sensing growth prospects, the company raised Rs 80.22 crore through an initial public offering (IPO) in May-June, 2008.

The major proceeds of the IPO were being invested in the API (Active Pharmaceutical Intermediates), manufacturing plant in the Jawahar PharmaCity in Visakhapatnam, he said. A pilot plant for carrying out Contract Research and Manufacturing (CRAM) is also coming up there at an investment of Rs 8.33 crore.

The Rs 63-crore facility would be ready by April-May, 2009. It would be double the size of the existing production units of the company, in terms of capacity located at Shadnagar and Pashamylaram on the outskirts of Hyderabad, he explained.

Exports

The company exports its products to Israel, Italy, Japan, France, the US and Singapore. Currently, its exports comprise about 20 per cent of its total turnover, which stood at Rs 154 crore for fiscal 2007-08.
