Mr Kalyan Ganguly, Managing Director of UBL’s beer division, said though their current requirement for barley was being met through contract farming in Punjab, the rate of growth of the Indian beer market would necessitate developing extra acreage. “We found we can grow good quality barley in the Belgaum belt, and have developed seeds for it,” he said, adding that the research work was in partnership with the Punjab Agricultural University. Three varietalsMeanwhile, the division introduced the first three varietals of Kingfisher Bohemia wines — Pinotage Rose, Chenin Blanc Chardonnay (white) and Pinotage (red) in the Pune market. Made and bottled by Cape Town-based vintner “Company of Wine People”, the wines that have already been launched in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi will be introduced in Goa next. “We will leverage the Kingfisher brand assurance, use our distribution system to market it, and promote the wine along with our beers,” Mr Shekhar Ramamurthy, Deputy President, said.
