Higher IT e-returns filed

New Delhi, Aug. 1

Taxpayers have taken to electronic filing of income tax returns in a big way this year going by the number of e-returns received by the tax department till July 31.

Official data available with the tax department shows that 12.49 lakh e-returns (1.46 lakh) have been received till July 31.

Last year, up to the same date, the tax department had received 1.46 lakh e-returns. About 97 per cent of the 12.49 lakh e-returns had been filed voluntarily by individuals, professionals and small businesses, according to a release issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

The largest number of e-returns were filed from Maharashtra (2,78,112), followed by Delhi (1,53,992), Karnataka (1,44,267), Tamil Nadu (1,18,354) and Gujarat (1,15,798). - Our Bureau
