Arecanut meet to focus on value addition

Mangalore, Aug. 4

The Mangalore-based Arecanut Research and Development Foundation (ARDF) will organise a two-day international conference on the future of arecanut, in Mangalore from August 9.

Mr S.R. Rangamurthy, Managing Trustee of ARDF and President of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd, told Business Line here on Monday that the intention of organising the conference is to formulate strategies for sustainable production and marketing of the commodity and to discover scope for value-addition in view of price fluctuations and the impact of WTO regimes.

The conference will see the involvement of all the stakeholders from the arecanut sector such as growers, traders, policymakers, scientists and cooperative organisations.

Revolving fund

Referring to the market fluctuations associated with the commodity, he said the Government should formulate a revolving fund to provide succour to the stakeholders involved in the sector.
