Honesty and political survival

The interview “Honesty and political survival are incompatible” (Business Line, August 5) is thought-provoking and Dr Jayaprakash Narayan has been candid in his answers. Let us accept that despite the honesty of people like Dr Manmohan Singh, it is difficult to implement the positive and beneficial thoughts into action unless the political mess is overcome.

The Government should restrict its activity to education, health-care, infrastructure, and law and order.

The suggestion of number of seats based on percentage of votes is worth serious consideration to overcome the problems of fragmented polity and the regional and sub-regional forces calling the shots with a narrow approach and, in the process, the nation suffering.

It is worth implementing a system that is helpful to the nation.

To go with the situation and circumstances, we must adopt a better system to stay ahead instead of continuing to follow an archaic system.

It would be difficult to accept a change, but reason and rationality should prevail over sticking to rules laid down in the past.

I am happy to read an honest opinion on politics and the state of affairs today. I should accept that, after a long time, I had read a meaningful article.
