Infrastructure A case for infrastructure A Hong Kong-based businessman having production facilities in both North China and South India finds the Indian outfit more efficient, in terms of costs, productivity and other parameters. Yet the India-made products are not exactly competitive. The reason is simple: the Indian outfit is located some distance away from the port and transporting goods by road from the plant to the port has proved to be a difficult proposition. It takes such a long time to cover the distance , which is not very large, that the benefits of cost advantage resulting from the efficient production gets almost neutralised by the transportation delay caused by the lack of infrastructure. It might be interesting to note that India achieved 9 per cent growth despite such a creaking infrastructure. Imagine the wonder, we the country could have achieved had there been world-class infrastructure. OUR BUREAU More Stories on : Infrastructure
