Evergreen suspends buying plans

At a time when major container lines of the world have joined the race to place orders for mega-carriers, there is a solitary exception. The Taiwan-based container giant Evergreen has suspended plans for acquisition of mega-sized ships. The shipping line has downsized its order book in a reversal from a charter deal with management and leasing company Niki Group for eight ships each of 12,500-TEU capacity. As a result, Evergreen, according to AXS-Alphaliner News, is report ed to be the only large operator left without future investment in mega carriers and its order book is reduced to the sole 4298-TEU sub-Panamax, Ital Moderna, due for delivery in October. However, the company’s CEO has said that despite the near-empty order book, the shipping line may still operate 7,000-TEU vessels in next few years, presumably either by acquiring on charter or by acquiring second-hand tonnage for its mainline trades.
