‘Services providers can help product cos expand clientele’

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Aug. 11 Partnership with the service providers, modification in college curriculum, closer ties with educational institutions and inflow of venture capital funds – all these put together could help to accelerate the pace of software product development in India.

India has huge IT services companies who have the ability to influence the buying decision of their clients, said Mr Subash Menon, Chair, Nasscom Product Initiative, and Founder Chairman, MD & CEO, Subex Ltd, at the second annual Product Conclave organised by the apex software body

He said the service providers can take the products to their clients. This would be a great help to the product companies who lacked reach. “Here is where India can leverage the strength of the software services companies. It is a win-win situation for both”, he added.

Mr Menon also said it was important to make the freshers understand the potential of the product development industry. He said the industry needed a lot of freshers and steps must be taken to explain to them the future in software product development.

Curriculum change

There must be more interaction with the educational institutions. A change in the curriculum is also necessary to help students to understand what product development is. Courses on product development are a necessity. He also said the investor community was the lifeline of the industry, and lots of investments would have to be made.

Mr Som Mittal, President, Nasscom, said the product development culture was growing in India because many multinational companies have their R&D centre here. He said the evolution of the industry was happening and the eco-system and the talent pool existed here.

Mr Menon said many now wanted to join a product company. Venture Capitalists are willing to invest in the product space as well, a huge shift from what it was, he added.
