Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug. 13 GSM-based cellular operators added 6.7 million new users in July compared with 6.3 million in June.

The total subscriber base has moved up to 218 million at the end of July.

The biggest gainer was Bharti Airtel, which added 2.69 million new subscribers to take its total tally to 72 million. Vodafone Essar added 1.7 million subscribers making it the second largest GSM operator with 50 million users.

State owned-BSNL, which had been reporting a slump in its growth over the past three months, improved its performance marginally in July with little over half-a-million new subscribers in July, compared with just 3.6 lakh in June.

BSNL is rolling out new network to enhance its capacity, and is expected to add more subscribers in the coming months.

Idea Cellular is at the fourth spot with 28.2 million. The company added just over a million new subscribers in July. However, Spice Communications, which was recently acquired by Idea Cellular, reported a dip in its total subscriber base. The company has lost 3.5 lakh subscribers, a majority of which has come from Punjab.
