Mangalore gets waste management plant

Mangalore, Aug. 15 The solid waste management plant will be operationalised in Mangalore in two days, according to Mr Krishna Palemar, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister.

Speaking at the Independence Day celebrations here on Friday, he said that a compost plant and landfill sites have been developed for effective solid waste management in the city.

Built at a cost of Rs 15 crore, the infrastructure will be operationalised in two days.

Steps will also be initiated to develop markets in Bejai, Derebail, Urwa and Surathkal areas and Central Market in the city.

There are also plans to develop a commercial complex and a multi-level car parking facility at Hampankatta area and a commercial complex at Derebail area in the city. A new bus stand will be built near Pumpwell Circle in the city.

Housing site

He said that the Mangalore Urban Development Authority will come out with 127 housing sites on 9.81 acres of land at Padavu village.

Work on the construction of a vented dam across the River Netravathi will begin after the rainy season. To be built at a cost of Rs 40 crore, the dam will cater to the drinking water requirements of Mangalore city.

The Karnataka Government has announced the establishment of a coastal development authority in the budget for 2008-09, he said, adding that this will help boost growth of the region.
