Health States - Tamil Nadu Insera plans to bring ‘Shelter’ to treat strokes Our Bureau Chennai, Aug. 15 Though having a stroke is the second major cause of death globally and India is no exception. However, there is not enough medical equipment available in India to treat a particular type of stroke. Over 80 per cent of strokes are caused when blood clots or fatty deposits inside blood vessels cut off the flow of blood in the brain. It can cause paralysis, memory loss, speech impairment and may even prove to be fatal in some cases. In India, doctors use clot-busting drugs to dissolve the block. “But, when you do this, the smaller fragments of blood clot are dislodged and released into the brain, which could again be dangerous,” says Dr Vallabh Janardhan, a vascular/stroke specialist and neurointerventionalist. However, in the US and most European countries, there are companies that manufacture some mechanical devices to treat strokes. Insera is one such company in the US that developes and manufactures ‘Shelter’ a mechanical device that is designed to collect those smaller fragments of the blood clot and fat deposits dislodged during balloon angioplasty treatments in tiny blood vessels in the brain. Educational forumMr Vikram Janardhan, Chief Executive Officer of Insera, along with his brother Dr Vallabh Janardhan, is organising the first annual symposium on ‘Innovations in stroke, heart and vascular disease’, in Chennai on Saturday. It is meant to be an educational forum, which will highlight the recent advances in medical devices and therapeutics in the prevention of such disease, he said.
