Poultry Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Stop subsidised poultry meat from Brazil: NECC Our Bureau Hyderabad, Aug. 16 The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) has asked the Union Government to block moves to import unprocessed poultry meat to India. Quoting news reports, the NECC said the Brazilian Association of Chicken Producers and Exporters entered into a deal to export three lakh tonnes of unprocessed poultry to India. ‘No level playing field’“This import, if it takes place, will deny the poultry farmers of India a level playing field,” a NECC press release said here. “The poultry farmers in the country are already facing a crisis due to high input costs. The Brazilian imports would further impact the livelihoods of lakhs of poultry farmers,” it said. Export potential“Our poultry industry has the potential to increase the export of poultry products from the present Rs 400 crore a year to at least Rs 2,000-2,500 crore. “This will happen when the various trade-distorting subsidies by developed countries are withdrawn.” Besides extending direct and indirect benefits to its poultry farmers, Brazil, a major producer of maize, banned export of maize to offer the crucial input at a lower price. This, in turn, would help their farmers reduce cost of production. Subsidised chickenIn this backdrop, if the Government allowed subsidised chicken into the country it would further depress the farm-gate price of broilers, leading to enormous loss to the farmers, and forcing thousands of farmers to close down their farms. “When the poultry farmers are going through the worst crisis in the history of the industry, it would be unfair to expose them to competition from subsidised exports,” it said.
