Summit’s call for making India a global rubber power

Kochi, Aug 16 The first India Rubber Summit and Dinner with its focus on making India a global rubber power was inaugurated here on Saturday by Dr Hidde P. Smit, Secretary General, International Rubber Study Group (IRSG).

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Smit said prospects of natural rubber was bright in the near future with the rubber consumption on the rise across the globe.

The Summit and Dinner organised by Rubber Asia, a rubber magazine in association with the Rubber Board (India) and All-India Rubber Industries Association (AIRIA), was attended by about 300 rubber industry experts and industry leaders from India and abroad, mainly from major rubber producing countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

Mr Sajen Peter, Chairman, Rubber Board who presided over the inaugural session, said India had all the necessary potential to emerge as a global rubber power. He said the need of the hour was to have close cooperation and joint initiatives on the part of growers and consumers of natural rubber.

Mr Sang Udomjarumani, Chief Executive Officer, International Rubber Consortium (Thailand), delivered the special address on the rising natural rubber price and demand-supply mismatch.

The highlight of the summit was a panel discussion on the focal theme ‘India: A potential global rubber power’. The discussion was chaired by Mr Sandana Dass, Managing Director and CEO of the Singapore-based R1 International.

Those who spoke on various aspects of the theme included, Mr M.F. Vohra, President of All India Rubber Industries Association; Dr James Jacob, Director of the Rubber Research Institute of India; Dr S. Sivakumaran, Executive Director (Research and Development) of Mr Greenyield Bhd (Malaysia); Mr Rajiv Budhraja, Director-General of Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA); and Mr Pankaj , Managing Director, Harrisons Malayalam Ltd.
