‘Financial sector faces dearth of qualified professionals’

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Aug. 17 There is a dearth of qualified professionals in financial services, including the corporates, banking and insurance sectors, in the country, said Ms Renu Challu, Managing Director, State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH), here.

Insurance and banking required specialists. At present, expertise lay in public sector banks and insurance companies, which are getting poached by corporates for expertise, she said.

She made these remarks in her Presidential address at the inaugural of a post graduate diploma in banking, insurance and financial services launched by the Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE), here on Saturday.

Ms Renu Challu listed working as part of a team, good planning coupled with timely execution, work ethics, respect for expertise and experience of seniors, learning to understand and manage risks, as key traits that students, especially those pursuing management, should imbibe.

The member secretary of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Dr K. Narayana Rao, who inaugurated the two-year programme said, “Every person required some managerial skills, for day-to-day challenges demand them.”

Studying the scenario

However, management education itself seems to having its big share of weakness at the moment. Lack of trained faculty and facilities were hurting it, he pointed out.

One way of addressing this lacunae, which is also true of other faculties, as well a schools and colleges, was through the involvement of qualified people, attracted to spend a few hours teaching in neighbourhood institutes, Dr Rao suggested.

Referring to India-China comparisons, he said “Internal dictatorship and external democracy made China a successful model in development so far.” In the case of India with its democracy, the need to be able to inculcate internal discipline, especially in meeting targets was necessary.

In his welcome address, the Director of IPE, Prof R.K. Mishra, said about 32 students have joined the course. The institute would soon launch an MBA (biotechnology), he added.

IPE, was also approached to offer a one-year programme for UN executives. “We have asked the AICTE for permission,” he said.
