Strong demand for CTCs in Kolkata sale

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Aug 17

Last week, CTC teas once again met with strong demand at firm to occasionally dearer rates, particularly for dust teas, in North Indian auction centres at Kolkata, Guwahati and Siliguri. The major blender was active while there was fair support from Tata Tea and other packeteers. The western India buyers supported the liquoring categories while other internal and local buyers as well as exporters operated as usual.

Darjeeling whole leaf and brokens sold readily at lower levels while fannings sold irregularly around last. Traditional exporters and packeteers operated. There were inquiries from the UK/Continent and local buyers

In the orthodox sale, few tippy teas on offer sold at around last levels while the remainder tended firm and at times dearer. The West Asian and the CIS shippers were active while there was a fair enquiry from the Continent. North India buyers were selective while local buyers operated on the fannings.

CROP

Most plantation districts reported normal green leaf intake which was at par or slightly ahead than the previous year.

INTERNATIONAL MARKETS

The Mombasa market was generally firm to dearer, particularly for the smaller grades which appreciated in value. The Pakistan and Egyptian packers were active while Yemen and other West Asia countries, Sudan, Russia and Kazakhstan made strong enquiries.

The Colombo auction saw low growns once again decline in value while the remainder sold at firm rates. Traditional exporters operated as usual.
