Organic aquaculture project gets under way

Our Bureau

Kochi, Aug. 18 Rosen Fisheries in Kerala is the first successful hatchery in India to produce organic scampi seeds as per the international standards and specification of Naturland, the German certifying body.

The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) said the organic seed production, stocking and farming would be initially undertaken from Kerala and later from Andhra Pradesh.

This foray into organic aquaculture is the result of the India Organic Aquaculture Project (IOAP) which was initiated by MPEDA. The project was launched considering the growing importance of organic products the world over and its increasing demand and acceptance in niche markets.

Thrust area

MPEDA identified organic aquaculture as one of the thrust areas for development and for producing organic varieties of scampi and black tiger shrimp varieties. In order to obtain technical collaboration for the project, MPEDA signed an MoU with the Swiss Import Promotion Programme and obtained consultancy from the company Blueyou.

. The organic scampi seeds have now been stocked in fresh water farms totalling 20 hectares in Kuttanad in Kerala. The culture practices will be pursued from here.
