Pakistan cuts Coonoor tea purchases

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Aug. 18 Pakistan, which was the mainstay of the CTC leaf market at the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) for a few months now, reduced its purchases at Sale No: 33 this week in the backdrop of Tea Board’s exposure of alleged adulteration in a Nilgiri factory in teas for shipment to Pakistan.

“Importers are concerned. Traders want to avoid scrutiny. Exporters will draw from their stock to fulfil orders. So, fresh purchase for Pakistan was subdued this week,” an auctioneer told Business Line.

Lanka, Kenya buyers

CIS bought bolder varieties in the range of Rs 61 to 70 a kg. Egypt purchased medium CTC dusts for up to Rs 64. Teas for European ports were bought for up to Rs 72. Kenya bought CTC medium smaller dusts for up to Rs 65. There was some purchase of quality orthodox tea for the US market. Sri Lanka also picked up some teas this week.

On an average, prices rose Rs 2 a kg as auctioneers pushed up bids from upcountry buyers.
