Indian mangoes now find their way to Australia

Our Bureau

Chennai, Aug. 18 After the US and Japan, Australia is now set to import mangoes from India.

Australia’s ‘Final Import Risk Analysis Report for Fresh Mango Fruit from India’ has recommended that Indian mangoes be permitted entry subject to certain quarantine conditions.

Australia’s approval of an import policy for Indian mangoes was announced on Monday by the Acting Australian High Commissioner, Mr David Holly.

“This is the final step in Australia’s import risk analysis process and paves the way for India to start exporting mangoes during its next export season in 2009,” Mr Holly said.

“Australia is pleased to be increasing its agricultural trade with India, especially where increased trade will benefit both countries. With the two countries in different hemispheres, there is a good potential for counter-seasonal trade. Both Australia and India produce quality fruit but at different times of the year,” Mr Holly said.

Quaratine policy

Australia’s Director of Quarantine has determined the quarantine policy to allow the importation of mangoes from India. Like the US, mangoes meant for Australia will have to undergo the irradiation treatment.

India will now develop a detailed operational work plan for the mangoes export in consultation with Australia, which addresses the latter’s quarantine requirements and takes into consideration India’s post-harvest practices, including irradiation treatment.

Australia undertook the import risk analysis on fresh mango fruit in response to a proposal from India.

Access for Indian mangoes into Australia has been a long pending issue. On the other hand, Australians themselves are keen on getting Indian mangoes as they are supposed to be the sweetest.
