Aavin to expand procurement areas

Syed Muthahar Saqaf

Tiruchi, Aug. 18 The Tiruchi District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd (Aavin) has proposed to augment production to four lakh litres a day by next year from the present 3.06 lakh litres a day.

The union has planned various programmes to achieve this target, including covering new areas, starting societies and commissioning bulk milk coolers, among others, a senior official of the union said. The co-operative, at present, accounts for 650 milk producers’ societies with a membership of 2.10 lakh farmers in the revenue districts of Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur and Ariyalur. Of them, only 50,000 are active milk-pouring farmers.

The union has launched a field survey in the four districts to identify areas not covered by them. Already, some parts of Karur, Musiri, Kulithalai and Perambalur belts have been identified. Special efforts will be taken to set up new milk producers’ societies in these areas. Plans are on the anvil for creating 100 societies and increasing the strength of active milk-pouring farmers.

The milk producers’ union has planned to commission 13 bulk milk coolers (BMCs) in remote parts of its procurement areas to improve the quality of milk and also to enable the farmers to supply the milk to the societies without difficulty. The coolers will be commissioned in major societies. About 20 or more small societies functioning in the surrounding areas will be attached to each major society.
