Partial lockout declared at Pricol unit

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Aug. 22 A partial lockout has been declared in plant I of Pricol Ltd, located at Perianaickenpalayam near Coimbatore, since Thursday evening following alleged violence by a section of workers.

Conciliation talks held between the representatives of the management and the workers convened by the labour department were adjourned for tomorrow and the company is confident of resolving the issue. In a communication to the Bombay Stock Exchange, the company stated that ‘there is a labour unrest on August 22, 2008 in plant I & plant III and partial lockout in the company’s plant I, situated at Coimbatore’.

A company source told Business Line that a section of the workers indulged in violence on the eve of the all-India strike called by the trade unions affiliated to the Left parties on August 20 and some workers were injured in the violence. The company preferred a complaint to the police and resorted to declaring a partial lock out as a precautionary measure from Thursday evening in Plant I.

The talks held before the Deputy Commissioner of Labour here were inconclusive and were adjourned for tomorrow.
