Mr Ravi Uppal

Bangalore, Aug. 26 Mr Ravi Uppal, President of Global Markets and a member of the ABB Group Executive Committee since July 2007, has decided to relinquish his position for personal reasons and plans to return to India to pursue a career outside ABB.

Mr Uppal will, however, continue as non-executive chairman of ABB in India, to help ensure continuity in the business in this rapidly growing market, the company said in a statement.

“A successor for his Zurich-based role as head of Global Markets will be announced in due course,” it said. “I fully understand and respect Ravi’s decision,” said the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Michel Demare.

“ABB has benefited greatly over the years from his energy, drive and business knowledge. He leaves a strong legacy of growth and achievement and the ABB Executive Committee wishes him every success in future”.

Mr Uppal joined ABB in 1980 and, after a five-year spell at Volvo, returned to the company as ABB country manager in India in 2001. He steered a period of very profitable growth in the country and, as the regional manager for South Asia from 2005 until his appointment to the Executive Committee, contributed to ABB’s development in the region.

He assumed responsibility for the South Asia region in 2006. He has been associated with ABB for 20 years in locations including Sweden and the Middle East.

As the Global Markets Head, he was responsible for all ABB regions and countries as well as the biggest customer accounts.

Talking to Business Line recently on his experience as one of the highest ranking Indians at ABB, and on the elements that Indian managers are strong at, Mr Uppal had stated that “some of the attributes that Indian managers bring with them include a strong academic background, entrepreneurial ability, good skill levels, hard work, perseverance and determination”.
