Marico teams up with Coconut Board

C.J. Punnathara

Kochi, Aug. 30 In order to strengthen its relationships with coconut farmers of the country, Marico Ltd has entered into a public-private sector initiative with the Coconut Development Board. This association and development of cluster programmes would help the coconut farmers and the company in equal measure, Mr Harsh C. Mariwala, Chairman and Managing Director of Marico Ltd, told Business Line.

The company, which sources 22,000 tonnes of copra from Kerala and Tamil Nadu, plans to increase it to 44,000 tonnes a month in two years. The initiative and collaboration with the Coconut Development Board and farmers would greatly help in this endeavour, Mr Mariwala said. Marico has set up 16 collection centres, which have enabled it to source 20 per cent of its copra requirements. The public-private initiative is expected to increase the sourcing from the collection centres.

Marico sources copra from Kerala for its production units in Kanjikode in Kerala and part of its requirements for the Goa unit.

The requirements of the Puducherry unit are mainly sourced from Tamil Nadu. With the booming market for cosmetics and hair oils, the company is also likely to increase capacity at these factories.

Specialised products and value addition would be another objective of the company.
