K.K. Birla passes away

Mr Krishna Kumar Birla, noted industrialist and a former Rajya Sabha member, died here on Saturday. He was 90.

He is survived by his three daughters, Ms Sobhana Bhartia, Ms Nandini Nopany and Ms Jyoti Poddar, and sons-in-law and grandchildren. He had lost his wife Manorama Devi Birla about a month ago.

Mr B.K. Birla, his younger brother, was present at the bedside when he breathed his last.

His body was cremated in the evening.

‘Public-spirited’

The West Bengal Governor, Mr Gopalkrishna Gandhi, visited Mr Birla’s residence at Birla Park, and said later that in the passing of away of Mr Birla and his wife “we have lost a couple that stood apart in high-mindedness and public spiritedness.”

The Governor described Mr Birla as ‘an outstanding social engineer, an innovative newspaper owner and industrialist.”

Mr Birla headed several industry and trade bodies from time to time such as Indian Sugar Mills Association, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry and the Indian Chamber of Commerce. He was also Sheriff of Calcutta.
