National remote sensing agency is now part of ISRO centre

Bangalore, Sept. 1

The Hyderabad-based autonomous society NRSA is now a part of ISRO and has been renamed National Remote Sensing Centre.

Dr V. Jayaraman, Director of Earth Observation Systems at ISRO headquarters, is its new Director. He took charge from Dr K. Radhakrishnan on Monday.

“Considering the importance of the activities carried out in the area of aerial and satellite remote sensing, the National Remote Sensing Agency, an autonomous society under the Department of Space, has been converted into a full-fledged government organisation called the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) from September 1,” an ISRO release said.

NRSA was formed as a registered society under the Department of Science & Technology in 1974 and came under the DoS in the early 1980s.

Integrate with others

“It is expected that NRSC will, as part of ISRO, fully integrate with other centres in the development and operations of the ground segment of the large constellation of India remote sensing satellites and will also take a bigger role during the R&D phase of the IRS programme,” it said.

Dr Jayaraman, an electronics engineer from the University of Madras, MS from IIT, Madras, and a Ph.D in physics, is recognised for his contributions in the areas ranging from spacecraft systems engineering to applications development, positioning of policies and regulatory framework related to high technology inputs.

National programmes

NRSC will have a major role in important national programmes through the Ministries of agriculture, water resources, urban development, home affairs, and so on, including the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The society played a major role in the ground segment under the Indian Remote Sensing Programme.

It runs a training establishment, the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing at Dehra Dun.
