Westerly system unsettles weather in Northwest

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 5 Northwest India is set to receive welcome rains over the next three days as a causative trough embedded in an incoming westerly system made its presence felt across the border on Friday.

This will hold up for the time being the founding of the seasonal anti-cyclone (high-pressure system), which is synonymous with the start of withdrawal of monsoon.

The end of the wet spell could provide the window of opportunity for the anti-cyclone to get set and repel the monsoon circulation.

Towards the east, a north-south trough lay extended from Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim to the north Bay of Bengal. This will bring fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over the North-East during the next two days.

‘LOW’ BY FRIDAY

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has notified the formation of a likely `low’ over the west-central Bay of Bengal around Friday.

This is expected to be featured in the east-west shear zone of turbulence, which is about to trigger a fresh wave of rains over the south peninsula.

The ‘low’ will coax the monsoon trough to shift south of its current bearing along the Himalayan foothills.

The system may lack the firepower to penetrate the hinterland but would help sustain rains over the peninsula during September 8 to 15.

According to the IMD, the reviving monsoon is seen bringing widespread rainfall activity over the peninsula and adjoining central India from Thursday onwards.

A short-term outlook indicated fairly widespread rainfall over Maharashtra, Goa, coastal and north interior Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh for three days from Friday.

This phase would also see a decrease in rainfall over the Northeast and Northwest India.

WIDESPREAD RAINS

During the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning, rainfall occurred at most places over North Konkan, at many places over North Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada and south Gujarat region, at a few places over South Madhya Maharashtra and at isolated places over South Konkan-Goa, north Gujarat and Saurashtra.

Forecast for the next two days said rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over Konkan-Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada, at a few places over Gujarat and Saurashtra and at isolated places over Kutch. Heavy rainfall likely to occur at isolated places over Konkan-Goa and Madhya Maharashtra during the next two days.

Towards the South, the monsoon was vigorous over Rayalaseema and active over north interior Karnataka, said an update from the Met Centre, Chennai.
