Opinion - Letters
Aviation safety

This is in response to Mr Gerard Robertson’s letter in the Business Line edition of September 9.

He wrote: “It is not reflective of the Commonwealth approach. The Commonwealth approach is, in my experience of the Antipodean systems, much less adversarial and more co-operative.

“My point is that it is culture, not regulation, that drives the approach to safety.”

Except for four countries in the Commonwealth — New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK and, to some extent Singapore — the safety culture has been diluted to a very large extent.

In most of the other Commonwealth countries, corruption and misuse of the “co-operative approach,” has overtaken the system.

What has become predominant is the lack of recent knowledge of safety instruments.

He is right when he says that it may be applicable to the system in the US.

When ‘money power’ starts playing up, you need a very strong judicial system to keep this in check. Unfortunately, we lack that in India. When aviation is allowed to expand exponentially without proper safety culture, one cannot sit back and wait for things to happen.
