Environment Corporate - Alliances & Joint Ventures EU keen to work with domestic cos on emission norms Our Bureau New Delhi, Sept. 9 The European Union is willing to extend support and exchange know-how with the domestic auto industry on the stringent emission norms being adopted within the EU. An official from the EU Commission, Mr Robert Donkers, said, “The European Union is working on a proposal by which new cars would have to reduce the emission level to 120 gms of CO2 per litre by 2012 as compared with the current level of 160-165 gms of carbon dioxide emitted per litre.” “So we would also like to inform the companies here on how they could also work to bring down their emission levels,” he said at the sidelines of a FICCI seminar on India-EU cooperation in the energy and transport sector. Mr Donkers said that it could be through a variety of measures including replacing certain types of tyres, components and various engine parts. The EU delegation members also said it was working with Ministry of Petroleum, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers to organise joint programmes on this front. Mr Matthias Ruete, Director-General, Energy & Transport, European Commission, announced setting up an European business technology centre in the national capital to focus on research in the areas of energy conservation, transport, biotechnology, clean technologies and renewable energy sources.
