Letters ‘Pressure tactics” The article with above title (Business Line, September 10) refers to the stance of the Tatas and other corporates on the Singur issue. Companies are entitled to hold a position basically linked to an eternal principle — that it is difficult to survive with two bosses. A leader has to ensure an atmosphere conducive to business, so that every businessman can enhance the wealth of the area, while increasing his own personal wealth. As long as the Government approves or allows any facility, a law-abiding individual or company looks only to the Government to solve any subsequent claims made by third parties. Moreover, the claim in this instance is not of money, but return of the land used. Hence, I feel we cannot find fault with the Tatas for looking to the Government of the day for a solution to this claim. The Tatas’ Nano is a prestigious project for the nation, being watched closely even by the developed world, and many across the country feel bad at the possible delay in the scheduled production levels. T. Sekhar Chennai * * * This refers to the article “Pressure tactics” (Business Line, September 10). Kudos to the author for correctly pinpointing the real issue in Singur (and in most other places in India where industries are being pushed down the throats of tribals, rural people and vital ecosystems), though the industries and politicians have seldom cared to assess the real issues on the ground. Industry and the Government should also note that if they had followed an open and honest policy of acquiring land, such an impasse would not have come about. Instead, they took the route of cajoling and forcing the land acquisition which has led to the current situation. R. Balachandran e-mail More Stories on : Letters | New Projects | Politics
