US Federal Transit Authority sees potential for cooperation

Hyderabad, Sept. 26 The US Federal Transit Administration (FTA) on Friday mentioned about the possibility of co-operation with Indian transport authorities in the areas of mass transport projects, railways, roads and other networks, sharing know-how and best practices.

This move follows a memorandum of understanding for co-operation entered into by India and the US last year.

Areas under focus

Speaking at an interactive meeting hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Friday, Mr Ronald E. Boenau, Senior Transport Systems Advisor, US FTA, said that the MoU envisaged technology and information exchange in the areas of Bus Rapid Transport Systems, Intelligent Transport Systems and use of Clean Energy Fuels.

The US delegation included representatives from the Federal Government, private technology providers and entrepreneurs currently touring India as a follow-up of the co-operation initiative.

The Vice-President, Policy, American Public Transportation association, mentioned how a consensus-based approach was being used to evolve standards in the industry.

Railway potential

Earlier, in the keynote address, the Vice-Chairman of CII, Andhra Pradesh, and Managing Director of Malaxmi NBFA Ventures, Mr Y. Harish Chandra Prasad, said that the visit of the US delegation will help explore new areas of co-operation in developing urban infrastructure and transport systems, which will streamline existing systems.

Presenting an overview of Indian Railways and opportunities to work together through private partnership, the Chief Operations Manager, South Central Railway, Mr J.N. Jagannath, said that there is potential for private sector participation in the management of container traffic.
