Mangalore, Sept. 28

The Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, who chaired the first meeting of the Karnataka Coastal Development Authority here on Sunday, has asked the authority members to formulate plans for development projects for the region.

He suggested that these project proposals be presented at the global investors’ meet scheduled to be held in December.

Addressing presspersons after the meeting, he said: “Though today’s meeting discussed many important subjects, they are in preliminary stage. A shape will be given for them in a month or two. The Government is planning to conduct a global investors’ meet in Bangalore in December. If the project proposals are ready by then, it will help attract investment to the region.”

The authority has been asked to meet every month, he said.

The Coastal Area Development Authority is formed for the overall development of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts in Karnataka.

MANGALORE DEVELOPMENT

Earlier he participated in a meeting to discuss the development of infrastructure in Mangalore. Mr G. Giridhar Prabhu, a citizen of Mangalore, presented a blue print for the comprehensive development of the city in the next 15 years.

Presenting the summary of projects for the Mangalore infrastructure development, Mr Prabhu said that the city needs an investment of around Rs 34,633 crore over the period of next 15 years.

If the State Government could contribute 10 per cent of this investment, the remaining investment can be sought from the private sector.

He suggested that investments in urban development, housing, traffic and transportation, telecom and power, tourism, human and community development, and government facilities can be attracted over a period of next 15 years.

Apart from investments, the State Government can support in speeding up of the projects. A policy specific to Mangalore can also be thought of in this regard, he added.

Welcoming the suggestions from the public on the occasion, Mr Yeddyurappa said that PPP (public-private partnership) mode of development is under study for the development of the state.

The suggestions from the people will be included in the next State Budget.

To a suggestion on the formation of ring road for Mangalore, he suggested the authorities concerned to begin a study on the project. The State Government is ready to extend financial assistance for that project, he added.
