Agilent Tech solution promises better study of genomics

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Sept. 30 In a major breakthrough that is likely to make the life of researchers and scientists working in the areas of genomics and disease studies easier, Agilent Technologies has launched a solution comprising tools that offer newer insights into diseases or biological processes.

The solution, developed in association with the Bangalore-based Strand Life Sciences, would have a significant impact on the way the disease patterns are studied at genetic levels, Mr Sanjeev Dhar, Country Operations manager (Life Science and Chemical Analysis) of Agilent Technologies India, said.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said GeneSpring GX 10.0, an upgrade of Agilent’s bioinformatics platform, would have links to a treasure trove of authenticated and validated information sources. “Besides helping the researchers cut down time and effort on reading voluminous information (as it provides relevant links), the solution arms them with statistical tools that analyses the data,” he said.

According to him, the solution would go a long way in helping the medical and pharmaceutical fraternities to offer ‘personal medicine’. (Personal medicine is a school of thought that argued that there couldn’t be a common prescription that suits all the patients down with the same problem.)

Developed by pooling up the best of technological, statistical and scientific expertise, the GeneSpring GX variant is a user-friendly solution.

Investments

Meanwhile, Agilent Technologies, which invested $40 million in the last 15 years, has lined up $35 million more. Part of this would also go into the Manesar (Gurgaon) campus, which would be ready by 2009.
