Opinion - Letters
Bank strike

This has reference to the letter “Economic Terrorism” (Business Line, October 1), that highlighted the irresponsible way in which bank employees in India are going on strike.

The bank-men struck work for saving the nation and the banks from the onslaught of globalisation. Had not the trade unions raised their voices against the ill-effects of mergers and entry of foreign banks, our banking system too would have collapsed along with the US financial giants.

The salary issue is a long pending one and bank staff are not the highest paid in the country. The entry level compensation of our IT children and private bank employees are more than that of a bank staffer who has served nearly 30 years.

The nine per cent growth story in India is largely because of the major role played by the PSBs.
