Our Bureau

New Delhi, Oct. 2 The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Thursday called upon the legal fraternity to suggest ways to strengthen the legal framework of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) so as to make it more effective in providing guaranteed employment to the rural people across the country.

Inaugurating an initiative on supporting NREGP through the State Legal Services Authorities here today, he said it was important that the rural poor are made aware of their rights under the programme.

He said some differences in the quality of programme implementation.

“Some States have shown good results. Some are lagging behind. I urge the States that have been left behind to make all efforts to catch up with the more progressive States. We need to mobilise public opinion in support of proper implementation of this Act (NREGA) all over the country plugging all loopholes and leakages which have come to our notice from time to time,” he said.
