Events States - Andhra Pradesh Ryots’ body to hold protests on Oct 22 Our Bureau Hyderabad, Oct. 3 To step up pressure on the Central and State Governments, the National Alliance of Farmers Associations (NAFA) has decided to organise nationwide protests on October 22. An umbrella organisation comprising over 50 farmers’ associations, NAFA would hold sit-ins in front of Parliament and in all the State capitals, with thousands of farmers demanding remunerative prices for all major crops. Addressing a press conference on Friday, Dr T. Haque, Advisor of NAFA and former chairman of the Commission for Agriculture Costs and Prices (CACP), blamed the Centre for anti-farmer policies. “The Government is more interested in ad hoc policies that do little in providing succour to farmers. The policies with regard to export and import of agricultural commodities are faulty,” he said. Alleging that the Government had not been sensitive to the issues facing farmers, he said NAFA would step up agitations to bring pressure on the local and national governments. Seeking a thorough revamp of the Centre’s data collection process (used by CACP for determining the cost of cultivation), he demanded that the Commission be given autonomous status. “The Government should offer interest-free crop loans to farmers and adequate and timely supply of inputs at reasonable prices,” he said.
