Hyderabad, Oct. 6

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour plans to recommend a set of emergency measures to prevent suicide and starvation deaths of weavers in Sircilla town in Andhra Pradesh.

The Committee is in Andhra Pradesh touring some of the villages with weaver concentration and also holding public hearing to understand their concerns firsthand.

Addressing a press conference today, the Chairman of Committee, Mr Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, said that the committee will recommend to the Government emergency measures, including setting up of a special textile zone and enhancing insurance coverage.

Poverty, indebtedness and malnutrition were identified as some of the causes of deaths.

He said that the administration had admitted that 330 weavers committed suicide in the last 10 years and in the last month alone 24 weavers died with 21 of them committing suicide.

The committee found that there was a large number of obsolete power looms and these require additional budgets to either totally change or upgrade them.

Earlier, the hereditary priest of Chilkur Balaji temple here, Mr C. S. Rangarajan, in a presentation highlighting the importance of handloom, said if half of the population bought one pair of clothes every year, the handloom cloth would have a business of Rs 10,000 crore.
