Marketing States - Karnataka Bunder area in Mangalore gets APMC sub-yard status Our Bureau Mangalore, Nov. 13 The 25-month-old struggle of the traders at Bunder area in Old Mangalore has come to an end with the Karnataka Agricultural Marketing Department notifying Bunder area as the market sub-yard of APMC (Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee). In a notification dated November 6, Mr G. Ramachandra, Director of Agricultural Marketing, Karnataka Government, notified Bunder area as the market sub-yard of APMC. Problem for traders in Bunder area began in October 2006, with the Karnataka Government initiating a move to denotify the area as the market yard of APMC. In a notification dated April 27, 2007, the Government notified 80.88 acres of land at Baikampady in Mangalore as the main market yard of APMC, and cancelled market yard status to Bunder. (Till then Baikampady was the market sub-yard of APMC). Mr G.G. Mohandas Prabhu, President of Old Bunder Wholesale Kirana and Allied Merchants’ Association, had contented at that time that market yard at Bunder has been in existence for the past three centuries, before market yard was put up at Baikampady a few years ago. The licence holders operating in Bunder had invested in assets of over Rs 500 crore. He had contended that more than 90 per cent of the revenue of Mangalore APMC was generated from Bunder. Traders got a temporary reprieve in July this year with the Karnataka Minister for Agricultural Marketing keeping in abeyance the decision to cancel the market sub-yard status of APMC to Bunder. Following this, the Director of Agriculture Marketing issued a notification on July 19, 2008 seeking suggestions and objections on the matter. After taking into consideration the suggestions and objections on the need to give market sub-yard status to Bunder, the Agricultural Marketing Department in the notification dated November 6, 2008 notified Bunder area as the market sub-yard of APMC. Welcoming this notification, Mr Mohandas Prabhu told Business Line that this move will save the livelihood of more than 400 small and marginal traders and more than 2,500 employees dependent on them, in Bunder area.
