Internet Web Extras - New Products & Services Infospace unveils two products for faster Net search L.N. Revathy Coimbatore, Nov. 24 Within a year of establishing its research and development centre at Bangalore, the US headquartered Infospace has rolled out two products – Private Label and Domain Name System. Commenting on the progress, the Country Manager (India operations), Ms Srishti Sofat, said: “There is a great deal of noise on the Internet. Users are not just looking at fast answers, but answers that work. Infospace’s metasearch technology aggregates and analyses the results from leading search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, AOL and Ask to provide the accumulated result from each of them. We have progressed pretty quickly, developed two products – private label and domain name system.” Tech treatAsked about the metasearch technology, she explained that the company has tied up with Google, Yahoo and others to provide best results to its users. “When a user does a search on Infospace’s search engine, the search query is automatically transmitted to the various search engines. While all of these provide the results to Infospace, the metasearch technology picks the most relevant results from them and provides it to users.” There are 15-plus metasearch engines such as Brainboost, Clusty, Dogpile, Mamma, and Metacrawler Myriad Search. Among them, Dogpile, MetaCrawler and WebCrawler belong to Infospace. “With metasearch technology, the hours spent on such searches will be considerably reduced,” she said. “DNS translates domain name into IP addresses. If the user misspells something in the URL, the DNS automatically corrects it and helps the user save time from running a page error.” The company is contemplating to build a core group here, and strengthen its team in India. “We will be signing more deals with ISPs and will look to make the product more compelling,” she said. Asked if the economic turmoil would have any adverse impact on the company, she said: “The general slowdown will impact all business. If and when the advertisement revenues take a hit, we will also feel the pinch. But for now, the (Net) traffic is only growing.” More Stories on : Internet | New Products & Services
