Radio/TV Corporate - Diversification Bajaj Group plans acquisitions to enter media space Purvita Chatterjee Mumbai, Nov. 24 Bajaj Entertainment Art Music Sports (BEAMS), a division of Bajaj International, is planning to acquire television and radio channels to mark its entry into the media industry. “We are open to acquisitions and intend launching a single television channel and a radio station within the next two years and are looking at opportunities within this space,” said Mr Anant Bajaj, Executive Director, Bajaj International. Currently, the division is focussing on creating content for its future projects and this includes building a B2B platform which would serve as a one-stop shop for its entertainment, art and sports related content. “We believe there is an advantage of entering the broadcasting industry at a later stage. Currently, we are in the process of getting content and talent to build this business further,” added Mr Bajaj. Instead of launching a network of channels, BEAMS would be looking at introducing a single channel which is expected to be ‘unique’ with its content. As Mr Bajaj says, “We are yet to decide on the genre of the channel but it would have content which no one has seen before.” There are indications that its new television channel would have a heavy dose of reality shows featuring new artists with live programming based on music and dance talent hunts around the world. In fact, a liaison office has already been set up in West Asia and South Africa to scout for talent based in the region. “We have signed with certain DJs and music bands in West Asia and South Africa to build a pool of talent which could be used in our broadcasting business at a later stage,” states Mr Bajaj. In fact, BEAMS is also considering licensing its reality based shows to other television channels. Other ways of building synergies with its broadcasting business include production of small budget feature films. Currently, it is in the process of short-listing big and small-time directors. “We are planning to produce small budget films with meaningful themes. Both big and small directors making such films would be approached,” states Mr Bajaj. Building up educational content for tutoring in areas such as music playing and lyrics writing is also being incorporated as an added feature. “We are also building content for educational purposes and are trying to get a university to offer our courses in the future and this could be added to content on television too,” Mr Bajaj said.
