Trade & Labour Unions LCV operators may join transport strike Our Bureau Kolkata, Jan 6 The operators of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) might join the transport strike which entered the second day on Tuesday. This follows appeal by the strikers to the operators of Matadors, 407, Canters and DCM Toyota and other such vehicles for joining the strike called by the All-India Motor Transport Corporation (AIMTC) to create more pressure on the Government. The operators of LCVs, it is learnt, are examining the AIMTC’s appeal. heavy commercial vehiclesThe number of heavy commercial vehicles in the country is estimated at 45 lakhs but the number of LCVs will be more. In many areas, particularly hilly regions, where heavy vehicles cannot ply, the LCVs are the only means of transporting goods. Meanwhile, the strike, as the strikers claim, has further spread with more truck operators joining it. DemandsAlthough several demands have been raised in support of the strike, the strikers also know that all of them could not be conceded. Inquiries reveal that they will be happy and withdraw the strike if some of the major demands such as cut in diesel price, repeal of toll tax, rationalisation of service tax and reduction in tyres by 35 per cent, are met. Toll chargesFor example, a goods vehicle travelling between Kolkata and Delhi is required to cough about Rs 5,000 by way of toll charges for a round trip. Worse, even the free imports of cheaper tyres from China have been stopped. In all likelihood, the Government, as always, will proffer lots of assurances and constitute a committee to examine the issues involved in the strike. But the strikers will not feel assured, if past experiences are any indication. More Stories on : Trade & Labour Unions | Roadways
