Elections a dampener for airlines, says Amadeus

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Jan.29 The forthcoming general elections could prove a dampener for the domestic airline industry, Amadeus, supplier of IT solutions to the travel and tourism industry, said on Thursday.

“We have been observing the travel trends for the last three general elections. There has been a downward trend in travel during these three elections. We expect a similar trend during the forthcoming elections,” the Managing Director, Amadeus India, Mr Ankur Bhatia, said at a media briefing here on Thursday.

Amadeus India officials indicated that uncertainty in the build-up to the next Government taking office and what policies it will follow, leads to most domestic and international companies pushing back travel plans.

Meanwhile, the booking data shows that there has been a 7 per cent decline in domestic bookings in January this year as compared to the same period in the previous year.

“Passenger numbers carried by the domestic airlines are yet to pick up despite the new low fares airlines are offering flyers,” Mr Bhatia said.
